The Watering Club: Building Independence Through Social Connection
Are you looking for low-key social events where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) can hang out, build friendships, and practice independence? Blossom IDD’s Watering Club might be just the place. Created to help participants socialize confidently while navigating a variety of fun community settings, the Watering Club is a laid-back program that meets twice a month for coffee, breakfast, dinner, or happy hour outings. Read on to learn how it works, what’s required, and how you can get involved!
What Is the Watering Club?
- Community Gathering: Once or twice a month, adults with IDD meet for coffee, breakfast, or dinner.
- Peer-Focused: While there is initial staff support, participants spend most of their time interacting independently with peers.
- Pilot Program: Launched in 2023, this program is still evolving based on participant feedback. If you enjoy casual social events, you can help shape its future!
One-Time Blossom IDD Cost
- A one-time per season hour charge of $21 is billed under T2021 UA Day Services—Community Based if you’re receiving IRIS funding.
- No cash is accepted—thanks for understanding!
- Individuals can bring money to spend on their own purchases.
Who Can Join?
- Adults with IDD (Ages 18+)
- Independent with Self-Care Skills (e.g., toileting, bathing, dressing, eating) or accompanied by a support person if not fully independent.
- Adequate Social and Behavioral Self-Management or accompanied by a support person for guidance.
- Interested in More Social Opportunities.
- Any Community Member looking for meaningful engagement—all are welcome to join and support the group’s success!
Note: We encourage bringing a peer or friend (rather than a parent or guardian) if extra support is needed. However, we understand that isn’t always possible. If a family member must accompany the participant, that’s perfectly okay.
How the Watering Club Works
- Mark Your Calendar: Check the upcoming dates below.
- RSVP At Least 3 Days in Advance: This helps us secure reservations and manage logistics.
- Meet Up & Socialize: Blossom IDD staff will facilitate the first hour. Afterward, participants are free to hang out on their own and build friendships without constant supervision.
- Have Fun, Stay Safe, and Practice Independence!
